I keep thinking about the bookends to this story. That final shot of Amy putting her head on Theo's shoulder reminded me of this iconic image from The Simpsons. I noticed that the Wikipedia entry has, as of now, been revised as such:įinding himself lonely yet melancholically fulfilled at the end of their relationship I can't remember the last time one raised so many good questions but was still a really engaging movie. I love movies that raise philosophical questions. I didn't get that from the movie, but it is an interesting interpretation. The wikipedia article on the film says that Theodore was relieved that Samantha left. I felt like they were both sad and went to the roof to get some air and see the beauty of the city at night. The ending I liked, but wasn't sure how to interpret it. But was she just upset that he was able to form an attachment with a computer but not with her, an actual person? Perhaps. When a pet dies do we cry because we no longer have that relationships with the pet or because we have lost a possession we have become accustomed to having? Is there a fine line between feeling attachment for something and an actual relationship? So what about computers? Even if a computer isn't really thinking and responding to you but is in fact running an algorithm that tells it the proper thing to say next, as long as we couldn't tell the difference between that and an actual conversation with a human should it make a difference? Theodore's ex seemed horrified that he was in a relationship with his OS. Would a pet really understand the subtleties of your emotions? On a more general level perhaps but does that make a difference? Your cat might not care the slightest if you are happy or sad but you might still cry and feel upset when it dies. An intellectual connection? An emotional connection? A spiritual connection? Can't we form these connections with non-humans? People certainly get attached to their pets which they presumably do not connect with on an intellectual level, but what about an emotional level. What makes relationships special? Is it REALLY the physical form? The corporeal body? Is it something deeper. It also brings up to me the nature of relationships. Is it wrong to feel jealous if someone we love loves someone else? But for a computer with essentially infinite resources that would not be true. Can you love more than one person? Does loving one person diminish your love for another person? Perhaps by very nature of the fact that we are humans with a finite amount of time, attention and brainpower every bit of love we give to person A is a bit of love we aren't giving to person B. It also really brought to mind a question I've wondered about for years. I was just fascinated we saw specific scenes so differently. Perhaps both those points were implied in that one shot. There were a couple shots in the film of Theodore passing other people talking on their earpieces (to their OS's perhaps?) and she saw that as the films way of showing how engrossed everyone is with technology while I saw it as the films way of showing how many people are just seeking to form a bond and have a relationship. I saw it with my wife and we both perceived certain parts very differently. ![]() That she is only an object in which Theodore could learn from. If you look at the posters it's titled as 'her' as opposed to 'Her' which could mean that he has his own thoughts on Samantha's being. ![]() The title could also be a device for Jonze's thoughts. ![]() Has anyone else picked up little bits and pieces from the film that reveals the characters? Thoughts about the ending? Why the color orange was so dominant? I'd personally love to get a discussion going on as films like this need analyzing for maximum satisfaction in my opinion. Maybe that was the start of Theodore "blurring" out the differences between him and this OS which then lead to their relationship. At the exposition, in the scene where Samantha wakes Theodore up, we see him knocking over his glasses. Probably the best film for me, with it just beating out 'The Spectacular Now' I just saw the film and I absolutely ate it all up.
